PANGONG FROZEN LAKE MARATHON
The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon is one of the world's most extraordinary high-altitude endurance events, organized by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) on the frozen surface of the iconic Pangong Lake. More than just a marathon, it is a powerful platform to raise awareness about the alarming impact of climate change on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. As glaciers retreat and winters become shorter, the frozen surface of Pangong Lake is becoming increasingly unpredictable. The event carries a poignant message—that every edition could potentially be one of the last opportunities to run on the frozen lake, reminding participants and the world of the urgent need to protect our mountains and glaciers.
With the belief that "Who says you can't walk—or run—on water?", the marathon offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience of running entirely on natural ice at an altitude of 4,350 metres, making it one of the highest frozen lake marathons in the world. Inspired by internationally renowned frozen lake races, the event combines physical endurance, mental resilience, and adventure in one of the planet's most breathtaking landscapes.
The marathon attracts runners and adventure enthusiasts from across India and around the world, transforming Ladakh's harsh winter into a celebration of sport, nature, and community. Limited to a select number of participants to ensure safety and sustainability, the event includes both Full Marathon and Half Marathon categories following proper acclimatization in Leh. Comprehensive medical support, hydration stations, safety teams, and emergency services are deployed throughout the course, ensuring participants can safely experience this unique challenge. Every finisher is welcomed at the finish line with a traditional Ladakhi gift, celebrating both their achievement and the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Beyond the race itself, the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon reflects ASFL's broader vision of using adventure sports to promote environmental stewardship, responsible tourism, and sustainable livelihoods. It is a celebration of Ladakh's winter beauty, while serving as a powerful reminder that preserving this fragile landscape is essential for future generations.
HIMALAYAN POND HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP
The Himalayan Pond Hockey Championship is an international pond hockey festival jointly organized by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) and the Royal Enfield Social Mission. Held on Ladakh's naturally frozen lakes, the championship celebrates ice hockey in its purest form—playing the game the way nature intended, on natural ice surrounded by the breathtaking Himalayan landscape.
Featuring 17 teams from seven countries—India, the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, France, and Malaysia—the championship brings together players from across the world while placing Ladakh at the heart of the global pond hockey community. More than a tournament, it is a celebration of the region's rich ice hockey culture, creating meaningful cultural exchange, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable experiences on natural ice.
At its core, the championship is built on the values of inclusion and community. It strives to bring together everyone connected to ice hockey in Ladakh—from young beginners and aspiring athletes to women's teams, veteran players, coaches, officials, and local communities. By creating opportunities across genders, age groups, and skill levels, the event strengthens the region's hockey ecosystem while inspiring the next generation of players.
The championship also transforms Ladakh's long, cold winters into a season of celebration. What is often seen as a harsh and quiet landscape comes alive with sport, laughter, music, and community spirit, showcasing the beauty of winter in the Himalayas. Beyond the competition, the event promotes grassroots ice hockey development, sustainable winter tourism, and Ladakh's growing reputation as one of the world's most unique destinations for winter sports.
